Lorenzo de' Medici & Girolamo Savonarola: Two Faces of the Italian Renaissance

Compact but comprehensive overview of Savonarola
This a lecture mostly about Savonarola in the context of the contemporaneous rule of the Medici family in Florence. It is quite sympathetic to Savonarola and not quite to the Medici, following the modern trend to reevaluate the legacy of Savonarola and the political tyranny of the Medici. In over one hour and 45 minutes it manages to present a rather comprehensive view of the last decade of the fifteen century and the political and religious turmoil of the time. If you do not have much time to read history books and biographies this is a highly recommended summary.

In terms of content the only drawback I found is that it is based on three myths of the Renaissance, the second of which seems far fetched. "A myth of who we are and how do we relate to the Renaissance": "If a man of the renaissance were to visit a museum of modern art he would be appalled..." Sure!! Even some modern persons are appalled at some of what we call art today. A myth or a fact of life...
